Live Earth - Concerts to spread the msg of answering calls ... or to IGNORE them?!

the live earth concert had jus ended over the wkend frm 7/7/07 to 8/7/07. the 24-hr show was proposed by ex-vice-president Al Gore in response to the various global issues on pollutions, global warming and conserving resources. the concerts attracted millions worldwide, featuring high-end artistes such as The Police, Linkin Park and Madonna.

however, despite the many reports on the impact the concerts had on ppl, many shud be wondering jus how much resources were wasted on this?

first fact - the 24-hr show attracted many audiences to watch it live at the venues. 24 hours ... it is almost impossible to sae that these grp of audiences stayed throughout the course without eating and producing trash. fact is, in Sydney, 2 cubic tonnes of rubbish was produced after the concert itself, by a mere 45,000 crowd. this might not be a huge problem as most were sent for recycling, but to clean up the mess was a chore.

second fact - altho i cudnt get the statistics, imagine the amount of electricity wasted to hold these concerts. the lightings, the mics, the guitars etc. so much for short msges in between the shows to encourage us to use energy saving light bulbs and motion detectors. how much electricity was generated and used? hard to tell. the scarier thing was, the concerts lasted for 24 hrs.

third fact - filming of all the short films presented by various movie stars and artistes. again on the issue of energy. NGs were inevitable, and the equipment used require large amount of energy as well. ok, so much for energy conservation.

fourth fact - since the concerts were supposed to reach out to more than 2 billion ppl, imagine that number of ppl staying at home, watching the TV having their air-con switched on for 24hrs. even not throughout the show, sae for jus 12-20 hrs. how much energy had been wasted? the CFCs generated by old air-cons, the greenhouse gases. wasting the electricity generated frm fuel. ah, so much.

u might have thought of more facts than i do, and the list goes on. so, jus how many of us realise the importance of saving the earth? yea, it's the future, and probably wun hv any effect on us. but wud u wan ur descendants to live w/o being able to see the clear blue sky and vast greenlands?

i guess this movement had somewhat been a failure. ppl showed up in concerts, watched them throughout the day to sae, "hey, i'm supporting this green movement". but true enough, most attended jus to watch their idols perform, n enjoy jus another day out with frens, and new frens.

so finally, since so much energy and resources were wasted, are we supposed to use less air-con, keep our bottles, watch less TV, read our books in the moonlight etc. as efforts to save the earth? or ... are they telling us, oh, it's ok to waste so much once in a while? haha. wad irony.

i personally support green movements in hopes to ask ppl to conserve, reduce, reuse and recycle. tho not a hyper active member to tell ppl to conserve, i do the least i can to make this world a better place such as reusing bottles and containers, simply switch off electrical appliances when not needed and reduce the usage of plastic bags. these little things do help, accumulatively. maybe this wun do much to ask u to conserve, but perhaps, for conservation-conscious ppl, i hope u all realise how the concerts had created a negative impact on the environment.

to end - PLS ANSWER THE CALL
